Prevent Outlook links opening in Microsoft Edge by default

Symptom

When a link is clicked from within an email in Outlook, Microsoft Edge opens and requests the user to login into their 365 account before viewing the page.

Reason

The latest Microsoft 365 updates, set Microsoft Edge above your default browser for opening email links from Microsoft Outlook

Resolution

The default hyperlink application setting need changing in Outlook, from Microsoft Edge to default browser within the Microsoft Outlook settings as below:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook and click the file menu item top left as below:
  2. Then click the options' menu item bottom left
  3. Then click the advanced button, 5th menu item from the bottom
  4. To the right-hand side, you should now see the Open hyperlinks from Outlook in: option as in the image above
  5. Click the drop-down selection box and select default browser as your selection not Microsoft Edge
  6. Then click ok bottom right to save changes.
  7. If the problem persists, repeat the above steps and ensure the default bowser setting as held in the settings.
